Old School Design: 1976 World Series

Old School Design: 1976 World Series

Today's Old School Design takes a look at a classic World Series ticket design from the 1976 World Series in Cincinnati. The year was 1976 and the Big Red Machine was in full swing. Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Dave Concepcion, Ken Griffey, George Foster and Tony Perez were some of the famous names on the Big Red Machine.
The Reds were the defending World Series champions and faced off against the New York Yankees. The 1976 World Series only went four games, as the Reds pulled off a 4 game sweep of Thurman Munson and the New York Yankees.
This ticket stub is a classic example of 1970's graphic design. The 76 logo is perfectly stylized for the design styles of the time. The font used for the words World Series and N.L. vs. A.L. are also 70's classic type styles.
The ticket features an image of the World Championship trophy and the Reds logo featuring Mr. Red. This ticket stub was for Game 2 of the Series at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. The price for a Loge Box seat at this historical game was only $15.00. Wouldn't you love to hop back in time and lay down a quick $15.00 to witness an event like that?

Star Wars plates - afternoon tea just got kitsch!

Q: What do you do when one part of you brain is screaming "Chintz! Shabby chic! Vintage teacups!" and the other replies "Sci-fi! Star Wars! GEEKERY!"?

A: Buy these plates from Etsy seller BeatUpCreations, first discovered by one of my fave blogs, Daddy Likey.

I don't even know where to begin with these. They're kitsch brilliance! My nan used to collect those old-fashion picture plates that hung on the wall, and I was mesmerized by them as a child. Imagine these as a tongue-in-cheek modern day alternative. I'd definitely use them as art, not crockery. I refuse to eat cake off a Wookiee.

But doesn't stop at just Star Wars. It gets even better. Look!

Kia Super Bowl 2010 Commercial

Kia's 2010 Super Bowl commercial features the All-New 2011 Sorento and the unbelievably fun cast from the Nick Jr. series 'Yo Gabba Gabba!' along with their friends. Muno, Brobee and Flex join the delectable Sock Monkey and Teddy Bear for an amazing joyride across the country. But most importantly, the characters rock out [and even do the robot] to The Heavy's 'How You Like Me Now?'

The catchy tune -- with
heavy guitar riffs and neo-soul attitude -- is featured on the English indie/rock quintet's October-released sophomore album 'The House That Dirt Built' (in reference to the nursery rhyme: 'This Is the House That Jack Built.') The song has also been featured on the Season Six finale of 'Entourage' andperformed on the Jan. 18th episode of the 'The Late Show With David Letterman.'

Kia's formula? Mash a hip, indie band with a children's favorite cast of characters, and they've grabbed the attention of young, hip parents that want a fashionable, sportier ride but the functionality and space to transport the kids. Well done Kia. Check out the commercial below!
